Council travels in to the future to approve zoning change

Here is an excerpt from the staff report presented at the April 6th meeting on declaring the Komoka Community Centre Surplus:

“Once the property is declared surplus to the Municipality, staff will initiate the appropriate zoning amendments to accommodate the new venture. The property is currently zoned Open Space (OS) and requires a zoning by-law amendment to a site-specific Village Commercial (C1) zone for this venture which will occur as the next step following the today’s meeting.”

The rezoning of this property requires a process to be followed which includes a notification to the public and a public meeting to allow residents to submit or speak to their comments. Based on staff reports this rezoning process would happen after the Community Centre is declared surplus.

The Zoning change request to Village Commercial Zoning (C1) has to be approved by Council and this “process” is not going to start till after the Centre is declared surplus. We put process in quotes as it appears that some Council members and staff already know that the zoning change will be approved otherwise everything is for not.

To our residents who would like to get the zoning change motion defeated to keep the zoning Open Space be assured the community will be there to support and help you. There is always the appeal “process” if the zoning gets passed. If the public is ignored and this proposed development does move forward, Queen St. and area residents need to look out for big sign boards and parking lot lights during the site plan phase.
